QUALIFICATIONS AND JOB DESCRIPTION

Who are we:

The British Consulate General in Istanbul is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The UK Department for Business and Trade, represented at the Consulate General, is a domestic and international economic department securing UK and global prosperity by promoting and financing international trade and investment. 

We are recruiting a Head of Financial Services and Professional and Business Services (PBS) - Trade Promotion Manager to join the UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT), based at the British Consulate General in Istanbul. This role will work on behalf of UK Government to lead the UK’s export promotion in Financial Services and Professional and Business Services (PBS) to Türkiye. 

The UK is a global leader in the financial, professional, business and other service sectors. Financial and Professional Services are an important sector for the UK-Türkiye trading relationship, across areas such as banking, insurance, capital markets, green finance, fintech and related professional services sectors such as management consultancy and legal services. This is a large and challenging area to operate in but one with opportunity for UK and Türkiye collaboration. 

You will lead all trade promotion work relating to the UK’s trade in services in Türkiye, including: setting and delivering a business development strategy for the sectors; developing a pipeline of UK export projects; building a network of, and influencing, senior UK and Turkish stakeholders; and delivering market and business development activity. The ideal candidate will be highly strategic, self-starter and able to operate with a significant degree of autonomy, under the direction of the Deputy Head of Trade Promotion in Istanbul. 

In time, you may take responsibility for looking for opportunities to expand the UK’s services offer in Türkiye to other service sectors, such as creative industries. 

All our roles are subject to the strategy and priorities of the UK Department for Business and Trade. You should be flexible and able to respond to any adjustment in role and responsibilities arising from strategy changes. 

The role is about:

  • Create and deliver a strategy for increasing exports in and enhancing the bilateral trading relationship within the Financial and Professional Services (FPS) sector and the Professional Business Services sector
  • Research, identify and deliver high-value export opportunities for UK FPS and PBS companies, and support UK companies to access to these opportunities and win significant contracts in Türkiye
  • Build and manage senior relationships with companies, government departments, trade associations and multipliers in the UK and Türkiye
  • Work with stakeholders in the UK government, the UK’s Mission to Türkiye and DIT’s Eastern Europe and Central Asia network, including Ministers, HM Ambassador, HM Consul General and HM Trade Commissioner
  • Work with trade policy and market access colleagues to overcome trade barriers being faced by UK companies in the FPS sector
  • Play a leadership role in the DIT Türkiye Trade Promotion Team
  • In time, expand work to develop the UK’s services offer in Türkiye to other service sectors, such as creative industries
  • Report to the Deputy Head of Trade Promotion, based in Istanbul


Essential qualifications, skills and experience  

Our ideal candidate has:

  • Experience in the financial/banking and/or professional services industries in Türkiye
  • A proven track record of strategic business development
  • Proficiency in English and Turkish  (both written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Proven stakeholder management skills, comfortable dealing with senior officials and business people (both with the clients and service providers) 
  • Self-starting, professional, confident and proactive approach to work
  • Ability to prioritise, efficient time management and good planning skills 

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience  

Good to have:

  • An in-depth understanding of the FPS and PBS sectors and a strong Turkish industry network
  • Experience in working in an international environment and virtual teams
  • Experience of working in the UK; knowledge of the business environment and of UK business-related policies, including green/sustainable finance
